Let's clear something up: your kids don't make your schedule. You do.
Your toddler didn't sit down with a planner and decide your workout was the first thing to go this week. Your 10-year-old didn't rank "Mom's lifting session" below "literally anything else." You, and probably without even noticing you were doing it.
That's good news
If you're the one deciding what gets a spot on the calendar, you're also the one who can decide differently.
Where "later" actually comes from
Here's how it usually goes. The calendar fills up with the things that feel urgent and immovable: school pickup, practice, work meetings, dinner, bedtime. Your workout doesn't have a fixed slot, so it gets pushed to "whenever there's time." And there's rarely time left over at the end of a full day.
It isn't that your week is too full of important things. It's that your health has been competing for leftover time instead of a real spot.
Move it up the list, not to the bottom
After the things that genuinely can't move, the mandatory kid activities, the non-negotiable work blocks, your health goes next. Not last. Not "if there's time." Next.
That doesn't mean everything else stops mattering. It means your health stops being the thing that automatically loses when the week gets tight.
What this looks like in practice
- Write down what's actually non-negotiable this week: school drop-off and pickup, practices, fixed work hours. Be honest about what really can't move.
- Block your workouts in immediately after, before the rest of the week has a chance to fill in around them.
- Protect that block the same way you'd protect a doctor's appointment or a work meeting. It's on the calendar. It's not optional just because nobody else put it there. YOU DID.
You're allowed to book a block on your own calendar
This isn't about doing more or adding pressure to an already full week. It's about where you place the thing you're already trying to do. A short, consistent workout that has a real spot on the calendar beats a longer one that's always getting bumped.
